Privacy Policy
Last updated: March 26, 2026
Hanzio ("Hanzio," "We," "Us," "Our") is operated from Spain and respects your privacy and is committed to protecting it through our compliance with this policy. This document details the types of information we may collect or that you may provide when you access, use or register with Hanzio's website and mobile application (collectively "Services") and our practices for using, maintaining, protecting and disclosing that information.
Please read this carefully to understand our policies and practices regarding your information and how we will treat it. By using or registering with our Services, you agree to this Privacy Policy. Your continued use of our Services after we make changes is deemed to be acceptance of those changes, so please check the policy periodically for updates as it may change from time to time.
Information We Collect and How We Collect It
We collect information from and about users of our Services:
- Directly from you when you provide it to us.
- Automatically when you use the Services.
Information You Provide to Us
When you use or register with the Services, we may ask you to provide information by which you may be personally identified ("Personal Information").
This information includes:
- Name and username: A display name and unique username you choose when creating your account.
- Email address: Used for account authentication, password recovery, and service communications.
- Optional profile data: During onboarding, you may optionally provide your experience level, age range, gender, and how you heard about us. This information is used solely to personalize your learning experience and is not required to use the Services.
- Learning data: Your study progress, vocabulary lists, review history, and learning preferences.
- Payment information: If you subscribe to premium features, payment is processed by third-party platforms (Apple App Store, Google Play Store). Hanzio does not store your credit card or payment details.
- Community contributions: If you choose to contribute content to the community — such as mnemonics, proposed meanings, example sentences, or votes — we store the contributed content and associate it with your account for moderation purposes. On account deletion, your authorship is anonymized (author link removed) but the contributed content remains.
Automatic Information Collection
When you download, access or use the Services, we may automatically collect:
- Usage Details: Information about how you use the app, including study sessions, features accessed, and learning progress. We use Firebase Analytics to collect this data to improve our Services.
- Device Information: We may collect information about your mobile device, including device type, operating system, and unique device identifiers.
- Crash Reports: We collect crash and error reports to identify and fix technical issues.
- Advertising data: For free (non-premium) users, we display ads through Google AdMob. AdMob may collect device identifiers, IP address, and usage data to serve ads. Ads are limited to general-audience content. Premium subscribers do not see ads and this data is not collected for them. In the European Economic Area, we obtain your consent before serving personalized ads through a consent form displayed within the app. You can change your ad preferences at any time in the app's privacy settings. On iOS, you may also be asked for permission to track your activity across apps. You can opt out of personalized ads at any time through the app's privacy settings or your device settings. See Google's privacy policy for more details.
- AI-assisted features: Certain features use third-party AI services (such as OpenAI or Anthropic) to generate mnemonic aids from dictionary data (character component meanings) and to translate example sentences when you request a translation. These requests contain only dictionary and learning content — no personal user data is included. The AI providers may process this content in accordance with their own privacy policies.
- On-device processing: Handwriting recognition is processed on your device using Google ML Kit. Text-to-speech uses your device's built-in speech services. These features do not send your handwriting or audio data to external servers.
Use of Personal Information We Collect
We may use the information we collect from you in the following ways:
- To provide our Services: Setting up your account, syncing your learning progress across devices, and delivering the core functionality of Hanzio.
- To personalize your experience: Adapting content and spaced repetition scheduling based on your learning progress and preferences.
- To improve our Services: Analyzing usage patterns to enhance our spaced repetition algorithms, fix bugs, and develop new features.
- To communicate with you: Sending service-related messages, including account confirmations, technical notices, updates, security alerts, and support messages.
- To process transactions: Facilitating purchases through third-party payment platforms.
All data we collect is necessary for us to deliver the services you use. The amount we collect has been minimized wherever possible to respect your privacy.
Legal Basis for Processing (GDPR)
Under the General Data Protection Regulation, we process your personal information based on the following legal grounds:
- Contract performance: Processing necessary to provide you with the Services, including account creation, data synchronization, spaced repetition scheduling, and core learning features.
- Legitimate interest: Processing necessary for our legitimate interests, such as analyzing usage patterns to improve our Services, fixing bugs, ensuring security, and preventing fraud — where these interests are not overridden by your data protection rights.
- Consent: Processing based on your explicit consent, such as optional demographic data provided during onboarding, personalized advertising for free users (where consent is required by law), and marketing communications (when applicable). You may withdraw your consent at any time.
- Legal obligation: Processing necessary to comply with legal requirements, such as tax and financial record-keeping.
How We May Share Information We Collect
We may share personal information as follows:
- With service providers: Third-party services that help us operate our Services, such as Firebase (analytics and authentication), RevenueCat (subscription management), and payment processors (Apple, Google).
- With advertising partners: For free (non-premium) users, we share data with Google AdMob to display ads. AdMob may use device identifiers and usage information to serve relevant ads. We do not share your learning data or personal details with advertisers.
- For refund processing: If you request a refund for an in-app purchase, we may share data regarding your usage and consumption of purchased content with Apple to help resolve the refund request.
- For legal reasons: To respond to lawful requests and legal processes, or to protect the rights, property, and safety of Hanzio, our users, or the public.
- Business transfers: In the event that Hanzio is acquired or merges with another entity, your information may be transferred. We will notify you of any such change.
We do not sell your personal information to third parties.
Data Retention
We retain personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide you services. If you delete your account, we will delete or anonymize your personal information, except where we need to retain certain information for legitimate business or legal purposes (such as financial records).
Community contributions are retained even after account deletion, with authorship anonymized.
